I’ve started looking at Grand Cherokees. Two Overlands are on my radar.
Shame that whoever is selling this has no idea how to take useful photos. Or is specifically avoiding taking useful photos.

I gush about this thing on here from time to time and whore out this same picture over and over, but here we go.
When I lived in northeastern PA, I bought a ‘93 Grand Cherokee for $500 after the fuel pump on my Camaro died. Another winter was approaching and I figured a beater was in order, so I shelved the Z28 and picked it up.
Geronimo had the 5.2, full time AWD and was an absolute mule in mud and snow. I had it in mud holes up past the rockers and looked for things to climb when we would have a good snow. I eventually killed the transfer case when I had to limp it home on mismatched tires.
From that point forward I just pulled the front driveshaft and ran it in 2wd. That’s the one drawback to most V8 models. IIRC, they’re all AWD. The older ones had a viscous coupler in the transfer case while later in the model run they transitioned over to a more robust set up. Look into that; I don’t remember the details.
When I moved to Kentucky, I only took the Z28 and sold the Jeep to a friend at scrap value. By then I had killed the transfer case, cut off the power steering belt and only had 3 brakes after a line rusted out and I used a nail in the rear junction to block off that corner of the system. The transmission had also started slipping after running it low on ATF too many times.
I love both the 4.0 and 5.2 engines, but a real advantage of the ZJ is the availability of V8 power. They’re not fast by any means, but they have plenty torque and pull hard down low. My brother and I call engines like these torque turds. I swear acceleration is the same at quarter throttle as it is full throttle.
Again, it was $500 and got me everywhere I needed to go for 2 years while I was dirt poor and in college. I loved that Jeep and now judge the value of subsequent cars by how many Geronimos I could get for that much money.
They’re excellent rigs, underappreciated and can still be had for a song vs. a comparable XJ. They’ve got the same 4-link style front and rear suspension set up as a TJ. Honestly, I’d find a bone stock, well cared for example rather than some mud toy that has been beaten and abused.

I missed an opportunity to buy a mint, low mileage 4.0L WJ with selec-trac about a year ago. It was even white.
